The transmission system between Edmonton and Calgary was reinforced to avoid reliability issues for consumers in southern and central Alberta; to improve the efficiency of the transmission system; and to avoid system congestion. The Sunnybrook substation was constructed to interconnect the existing Alberta Interconnected Electric System to the new DC transmission line. This 500 kV substation provides the interconnection point to the existing generation in the area allowing for an efficient transport of power to southern Alberta.
This project consisted of the assembly and erection of five 500 kV circuit breakers; including five sets of 500 kV current transformers, five sets of 500 kV capacitive voltage transformers and thirteen 500 kV motor operated airbreak switches. The project also included three 138 kV circuit breakers; including two sets of 138 kV capacitive voltage transformers, two 138 kV motor operated airbreak switches and four manual operated airbreak switches. Two 15MVA 138/25 kV power transformers were also required to supply the converter station and switching substation with power and were installed and commissioned as part of this mega-project.
