With work taking place outside of Edmonton, this project involved an in-out connection of the new Poundmaker substation to the existing 240 kV 930L. The challenge was to construct a new, dead-end lattice tower, cutting into 930L with tight constraints on location and in poor soil conditions.
CANA High Voltage (CHV) was responsible for detailed design, material specification, construction work package and the design of foundations for both the tower and two substation A-frames. Slack spans were constrained by the location of existing and planned infrastructure. CHV’s engineers used SAPS finite element modeling to accurately design the catenary of the slacks pans including the weight of glass insulators.
