AltaLink was required to modify the Heartland Substation to accommodate ATCO Electric’s Eastern Alberta 500 kV Direct Current (DC) Transmission Line that is being built from the north of Fort Saskatchewan to the Brooks area. This project required the expansion of Heartland substation to allow the interconnection to ATCO’s new Heathfield HVDC Converter Station.
This project consisted of the assembly and erection of three 500 kV circuit breakers; three sets of 500 kV current transformers; three sets of 500 kV capacitive voltage transformers; and eight 500 kV motor operated disconnect switches. The project also involved the modification of the existing 500 kV bus configuration, the relocation of the existing line terminations into new bay locations, as well as the reconnection and retesting of the existing line protections.
CANA High Voltage performed the construction and testing & commissioning for the structural, electrical, and protection & control systems required to modify the AltaLink switching substation.
