The Extraction Phase 2/3 Expansion power line project provides high capacity power supply to new oil sands extraction facilities at CNRL Horizon Oil Sands Plant. Two 2.5 km long, double circuit overhead power lines are designed with one bundle 795 kcmil ACSR Drake conductor on self-supporting tubular steel structures and cast-in-place concrete pile foundations. The lines, located within the Horizon Plant operating area, had design challenges that included above and below ground congestion, extraordinary safety requirements and a particularly strong emphasis on performance and reliability.
CANA High Voltage (CHV) was responsible for all FEED components and the detailed power line design. Some specific tasks on the project included: design specifications, electrical engineering, structural engineering, foundation engineering, line layout, material selection, material vendor drawing technical reviews, as well as construction bid package and work packages and procurement.
