Located throughout Alberta, ATCO Electric’s 144 kV transmission grids consist primarily of wood pole, 144 kV transmission line. Following thermal studies performed by CANA High Voltage (CHV), this line was designated by ATCO for capacity upgrade. CHV was retained to provide the Lines Engineering services necessary to upgrade the line capacity.
Using PLS-Cadd models previously developed by CHV for ATCO, detailed engineering was performed for reconfiguration of several line segments to enable reliable operation at ATCO’s new loading. Mitigation included selective structure replacement, re-positioning and reconfiguration of distribution underbuild, and re-alignment of some segments of distribution circuit. Various mitigation schemes were examined with an emphasis on cost effectiveness and constructability. CHV developed construction work packages for both transmission and distribution work and, upon completion of construction, provided a professionally sealed re-rating report for the line.
